All Inspections

11 October 2012

During a routine inspection

People told us that they understood the care and support options available to them and they regularly discussed them with the staff. One person told us 'the staff are always around to talk to when I need to and listen to my views'. People told us that they felt safe, their needs were met and they received the support that they required. They told us that the home was a good place to live and that the staff supported them with whatever they did. One person told us that 'since I've lived here I've improved so much. I can't fault the support I've been given to get my life back on track. Without the support I don't know if I would still be here'. The staff members had a good knowledge of types of abuse and identifying possible signs of abuse. The staff spoken to also had a good understanding of how to report potential abuse. The provider has effective recruitment and selection procedures in place and carries out relevant checks when they employ staff. The provider had clear systems in place to obtain feedback from all persons involved in the service as well as auditing their own service.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

One person told us 'when I first moved here it was difficult. There has been a big turnaround and the staff are really supportive'.

We were also told 'Staff support me with my hobbies and whenever I have an issue they will sort it'.

Another person told us they thought 'the building is OK and my room is alright. The staff help me to clean it once a week'.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

One person told us that they thought things had generally improved in the home. They said 'this is not the ideal place for anyone to be, but we at least want to be happy here. The staff here have really made an effort with me and I respect that. I would tell you if things are wrong, but I also want you to know when things are going well, as that's important too.'

The care plans that we saw were dated January 2011. A staff member told us that up to date care plans were on the computer. Staff did not have access to the computer.

This could only be accessed by the manager and deputy manager, who weren't working on the day we visited.

One person's bedroom had been re-painted and the person told us that they had been asked about what colour they preferred. They told us that staff were now making more of an effort to support them.

We were told that there was still a problem with mice in the home. It was acknowledged that the manager was responsive in dealing with this.

Staff and people living in the home told us that the manager or deputy were in the home every day. The extent of their involvement in the home could not be fully established as the extra hours these people worked were not recorded on the staffing rota. Staff did not have access to computer held care records while managers were not present and we could also find no evidence of any quality monitoring within the home.

8 December 2010

During an inspection in response to concerns

We were only able to speak to one person using the service during our visit to Annecroft. We were told by that person that it was cold in the home. We were also told that the person thought it was 'awful' and that she 'couldn't wait to leave'. The person also said that staff had not tried to build a relationship with her.
